Glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve and can cause irreversible vision loss if left untreated. It is often associated with high intraocular pressure (IOP), which is caused by a build-up of fluid in the eye. Glaucoma can affect one or both eyes and is a leading cause of blindness worldwide.

Symptoms

The symptoms of glaucoma vary depending on the type and severity of the disease. In the early stages, there may be no symptoms at all, which is why regular eye exams are essential for early detection and treatment.

  • Loss of peripheral vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty adjusting to darkness
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Eye pain
  • Redness in the eye

Treatment

The primary treatments for glaucoma aim to lower IOP, which can be achieved through medications, laser therapy, or surgery.

In some cases, a combination of treatments may be needed to control the disease.

Glaucoma surgery is typically reserved for cases where medications and laser therapy have failed to control IOP. There are several types of glaucoma surgery, including trabeculectomy, tube shunt surgery, and laser trabeculoplasty.

Recovery

After glaucoma surgery, patients may experience some discomfort, redness, and blurry vision.

It may take several weeks or months for IOP to stabilise, and patients will need to continue to have regular follow-up visits with their ophthalmologist to monitor their condition.

If you are at risk for glaucoma or have noticed any changes in your vision, please contact us to make an appointment with one of the sub-specialised glaucoma specialists who can perform a comprehensive evaluation and discuss the best treatment options for you.
