General

Overview

General ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye-related problems and diseases. It involves the study of the structure, function, and diseases of the eye and its associated structures, including the eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, iris, lens, retina, optic nerve, and the surrounding tissues.

Services

General ophthalmologists provide comprehensive eye care services, including.

  • Routine eye exams
  • Prescribing corrective lenses
  • Diagnosing and treating eye infections and injuries
  • Managing eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration
  • Performing eye surgeries such as cataract surgery

Typical presentations

Typical presentations to our practice include.

  • Blurred vision: A common complaint that can be caused by a number of conditions such as refractive errors, cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy.
  • Red eyes: Redness of the eyes can be caused by a variety of factors such as allergies, infections, dry eyes, or more serious conditions such as uveitis or scleritis.
  • Eye pain: Pain in the eyes can be caused by a number of conditions such as corneal abrasions, iritis, glaucoma, or migraines.
  • Flashes and floaters: These are common symptoms that can indicate a retinal tear or detachment.
  • Dry eyes: This occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or the quality of the tears are poor, leading to discomfort and irritation.
  • Eye infections: Infections of the eye can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi and can lead to symptoms such as redness, swelling, discharge, and pain.
  • Double vision: This can be caused by a number of conditions such as strabismus, cataracts, or problems with the nerves that control eye movement.
  • Eyelid problems: Eyelid problems such as drooping eyelids, styes, or chalazia (chalazion).

All of the ophthalmologist at East Melbourne Eye Group provide general ophthalmology care, however some of the specialists have longer wait times than others due to their sub-specialised interests in surgery. If you are unsure which specialists to see, please call us for a recommendation.
