Cataracts

What are Cataracts

Cataracts are a common eye condition that affects people as they age. A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye that causes blurry or dim vision. It is caused by the build-up of protein in the lens, which makes it less transparent over time.

Symptoms

Cataracts can develop in one or both eyes, and they may develop slowly over time, or more rapidly.

  • Blurred or hazy vision
  • Difficulty seeing at night or in low light conditions
  • Glare or halos around lights
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Faded colours
  • Frequently changing eyeglass or contact lens prescription

Treatment

The primary treatment for cataracts is surgery.

Cataract surgery is a relatively simple and safe procedure that involves removing the clouded natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that patients can go home the same day.

Recovery

After cataract surgery, patients may experience some mild discomfort and blurry vision for a few days.

Most patients are able to resume normal activities within a week or two after surgery, and their vision gradually improves over the next several weeks.

If you have symptoms of cataracts or are experiencing vision problems, please contact us to make an appointment with one of the sub-specialised cataract specialists to discuss the best treatment options for you.
